Ambassador Program
Every athlete dreams of their success in their sports. The overtime game-winner, playing in the NHL, competing in college, representing their school at Varsity – the lists are virtually endless. Youth sports are fantastic for dreams, and teaching players how to dream, how to sacrifice to achieve those dreams, and even sometimes accepting when those dreams do not or cannot become a reality.
This is what sports are about – acting as an educator, a microcosm of adulthood, learning the lessons that transcend the sport and are applicable in success for the rest of their lives – hard work, sacrifice, perseverance, playing for a greater goal, selflessness, winning with grace, and growing from failure.
As much as we love the banners, the championships, throwing the gloves, and being victorious in our games, this is the true value of sports. Every athlete grows and is a better person, better equipped for the world after playing sports.
The Ambassador Program at Dishing Apples Hockey is designed to assist in the giving and receiving of this growth through connections with established, experienced hockey players and younger, less experienced players. The athletes learn to be leaders, to give back to the sport that gave them so much, and how to serve their community. The younger players receive a role model, someone to aspire to be, and a connection at a different level than adult coaches.
This a program we have run within the organizations we have been a part of and the impact has been tremendous. One such player in this program decided to become a certified student coach and has aspirations for coaching after his playing career is over. Furthermore, he still has a relationship with many of the players on the teams he mentored. Another player from the High School team I coached made such an impact, players came to cheer him on against their own Varsity team.
Furthermore, Dishing Apples Hockey will work with players to document their service and help to ensure it is eligible for service time for organizations such as National Honors Society.
